Mid Afternoon Summer Shadows
The mid afternoon shadows underneath the staircase are as interesting as the spiral staircase itself. The shadows were reworked to create variations of colors vertically – from cooler dark blue top to warmer purple and yellow bottom. The color on the staircase was updated with warmer colors to counteract with the cooler shadows. Small structures were introduced at the top left next to the air vent.
I looked around the surrounding buildings carefully for any interesting shapes like windows or doors or wires to introduce into the yellow building. I added two vertical wires next to the staircase, only to remove one of it afterwards. Even adding a thin line was unnecessary and seemed decorative like an after thought. Because of the iconic nature of the spiral structure, I decided not to add any more structure. Instead, I borrow a salmon color rectangle from the right side of the building and painted it on the left corner. The green background seemed a bit heavy. I decided to open it up by adding a horizontal cream bar on the top that is the same color as the building. The ends of this bar were purposely left uneven. I am quite happy with this progress and decided to call this painting complete.
